Formed in 1854, the North Eastern Railway dominated the North East of England, running from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the North to Leeds in the South, with an almost monopoly of railways to the East of that. It also had lines West to Carlisle and Tebay. Wherever it went, it carried huge amounts of coal. It became part of the LNER at the grouping in 1923.
