In 1897 the Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway changed its name to the Great Central Railway, as it expanded its operations towards London (Marylebone). Under neither name was the railway a great financial success – wags proclaimed that its name changed from Money Sunk & Lost to Gone Completely.

The GCR became part of the LNER group in 1923.
