Formed in 1846 with the intention of linking London with ‘the North’, it quickly became famous for linking London with a ploughed field just north of Doncaster. It quickly became a truly great railway, known for its fast engines (Stirling singles, Ivatt Atlantics, and of course Gresley’s Pacifics).
