MS&LR

Formed in 1847 with the intention of linking Manchester with Grimbsy, the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire (MS&L – known at the time as the ‘Money Sunk and Lost’, owing to its lack of profit) morphed into the Great Central Railway (GC – ‘Gone Completely’) in 1897, which again was not hugely profitable. It became part of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923.
